BiographyProbably Dutch by birth, and certainly by training, Soest was in England by the early 1640s; his earliest dated work is from 1646. Although he did not find much favor among court figures, he maintained a prosperous portrait practice until his death, and in 1658 his name appears in a published list of the best painters working in England. Often introspective, serious, and even eerie, Soest's works are little known today, but they are among the most arresting and inventive portraits created in early modern England.
