Cornelius Johnson I

British, 1593-1661
NationalityBritish
BiographyCornelius Johnson was born in London, October 14, 1593 and died in Utrecht, August 5, 1661.

Having been born in London to Dutch parents, Johnson possibly received his artistic training in Holland. From 1618 he was among England's most prolific portrait painters, drawing his patronage from provincial gentlemen, rather than court circles. His likenesses are remarkable for the sensitivity and intimacy they often convey. In December 1632 he was appointed a picture painter to Charles I, but the advent of Anthony Van Dyck that year evidently deprived him of patronage. In the early 1630s he retired to Bridge, Kent, where he painted members of the principal local families. In 1643, after the outbreak of the Civil War, he left England and continued his career in the Netherlands.
