NationalityBritish
BiographyThomas Hudson was born in Devonshire, ?1701 and died in Twickenham, January 26, 1779.

In his early twenties Hudson moved to London to study with the artist and theorist Jonathan Richardson. He married Richardson's daughter in 1725 and took over his practice in 1740. Until the mid-1750s, Hudson operated one of the most thriving studios in Britain and he made liberal use of workshop assistants to cope with the demand. Eclipsed in the late 1750s by the more sophisticated style of his former pupil Joshua Reynolds, Hudson retired in 1767 to his Thameside villa in Twickenham, where he formed a large collection of drawings and paintings.
