Label TextAround the year 2000, British artist David Hockney began portraying the Yorkshire countryside in which he was raised, capturing it at different times of the day and under different weather conditions in an attempt to, as he put it, "convey the experience of space." Here, he focuses on a lone tree, whose bare branches, tipped with an orangey pink, appear ready to burst into life under the early spring sun. In conceiving of landscape as experience, Hockney places his art in conversation with that of the nineteenth-century painter John Constable, whose pictures, like those on view in this room, sought to evoke the physical and psychological sensations of a particular place.
