David Hockney

British, 1937 - 2026

BiographyThe most celebrated British artist to have settled in the United States. From 1959 to 1962 he was a student at the Royal College of Art in London, where his classmates included R. B. Kitaj and other artists associated with the Pop Art movement in Britain. He lived in Los Angeles for periods between 1964 and 1968, painting the first of the swimming-pool paintings for which he is still best known. From 1968 to 1978 he lived in London and Paris, traveling widely. Since 1975 he has designed sets and costumes for a number of opera productions. He returned to Los Angeles in 1978 and has lived there since, though visiting England often and continuing to travel throughout the world. Hockney has used photography in various ways for most of his career and from 1982 made photographic collages. In recent years he has painted the landscape of his native Yorkshire and views of the Grand Canyon.
