DescriptionThis mantelpiece is decorated with flagons, grapes and other fruits, masks of the Greek god Pan. The central relief represents the infant Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and ecstasy, sitting on a goat on a leash. A satyr plays the tambourine, while a crowd of putti pull the goat and pour wine down its throat. On the fireback is a biblical representation showing Jesus with two pilgrims.
