BiographySir Martin Archer Shee was born in Dublin, December 20, 1769 and died in Brighton, August 19, 1850.

Shee succeeded Thomas Lawrence as fourth president of the Royal Academy and sought to emulate his predecessor's dashing, glamorous style. Classically educated in Ireland, Shee also studied at the drawing academy of the Royal Dublin Society. He settled in London in 1788 on the advice of American artist Gilbert Stuart. By 1790 he had been introduced to Joshua Reynolds and was enrolled in the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1800 and later, as president, supervised the move of the Academy from Somerset House to Trafalgar Square.
