Ann Constable

British, 1768 - 1854
BiographyAnn Constable (the sitter on the left) was born in 1768, the eldest daughter among six children of Ann Watts and Golding Constable, a prosperous mill owner in East Bergholt, Suffolk. Her brother John was born in 1776, and her sister Mary (the sitter on the right) in 1781. When the family home in East Bergholt was sold in 1819, Ann relocated to a house at Bergholt, while Mary and her younger, unmarried brother, Abram, settled in Flatford Mill. Twenty-five years later, Mary moved to Wenham Magna to be near the family of her married sister, Martha Whalley. Neither Ann nor Mary Constable married and little is known of their lives. John Constable predeceased both of his sisters, dying in 1837. Ann died in 1854 and Mary in 1862.
