BiographyGeorge Lambert was possibly born in 1700 and died in London, January 1765.

A significant figure in the history of English landscape painting, Lambert modified the topographical emphasis of country-house portraiture through a new attention to atmosphere and point of view. From 1726 until the end of his career, he worked as a theatrical scene painter in London. In 1735 he became a founding member of the Beef-Steak Club, whose literary and artistic members included William Hogarth. In 1746 Lambert was elected a governor of the Foundling Hospital, an important early venue for public displays of art. He became chairman of the Society of Artists in 1762, and its president in the year before his death.
