BiographyTilly Kettle was born in London, January 31, 1734 and died in Aleppo, Turkey, 1786.

Kettle began his career in Oxford and the Midlands, painting portraits in the style of Joshua Reynolds. He worked in India between 1769 and 1775, and was one of the first important artists to establish a professional practice there. Many of his sitters were of the Indian nobility. He died on his return journey to India, after an unsuccessful stint in London, Dublin, and Brussels.
