BiographyWilliam Owen was born in Ludlow, 1769 and died in London, March 11, 1825.

Owen's abilities as a portrait painter are most notable in his depictions of the very young and the very old. He arrived in London in 1786 to study with Charles Catton, coach painter to George III. Owen first exibited at the Royal Academy in 1792, and was elected a Royal Academician in 1806. He was appointed portrait painter to George, Prince of Wales, in 1810, and was elevated to principal portrait painter when the Prince became Regent in 1813. A serious spine injury suffered in 1820 abruptly ended Owen's career.
