John CromeBritish, 1768-1821

John Crome was born in Norwich, December 22, 1768 and died in Norwich, April 22, 1821.

Crome translated the naturalistic traditions of Dutch landscape painting to his native Norfolk, and did much to encourage the growth of art outside of London. He began his career apprenticed to a coach and sign painter between 1783 and 1790. By 1792 he had established himself as a drawing master, and in 1803 he set up the Norwich Society of Artists with his brother-in-law Robert Ladbrooke. Aside from tours to the Lake District and Wales, his one trip abroad was in 1814 to view Napoleon's art collection in Paris. His eldest son and grandsons were also painters
