BiographyJohn Wood was born in London, June 29, 1801 and died in London, April 19, 1870.

Wood showed early promise of success as a painter of historical and biblical subjects. He studied first with his father, a drawing master, and then at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the gold medal in 1825. In 1834 he was awarded a rare religious commission for an altarpiece for St. James's church, Bermondsey. His painting Elizabeth in the Tower won a prize at Manchester in 1836.
