Label TextThe 1930s was an era of evangelical revival movements, and Hurd based this print on a meeting he attended on the outskirts of his hometown, Roswell, New Mexico. He may have become interested in the revivalist meetings after seeing prints by George Bellows that lampooned revival leader Billy Sunday. There are striking similarities between Hurd's composition and Bellows's prints (hanging to the left) particularly the preacher's theatrical pose.
