Label TextFemale circus performers, actresses, and dancers were some of Kuniyoshi's favorite subjects. Here, a burlesque queen, dramatically lit from below by footlights, shares the stage with a pianist, whose foot one can see on the left edge of the composition.

Kuniyoshi's lithographs were independent works of art, not copies of his work in other media. As a teacher at the Art Students League in New York, he was an important influence on many young artists.
