Label TextCrane was a successful illustrator and writer of children’s books. This drawing is a design for a full-page illustration in one of his most ambitious publications. Household Stories from the Collection of the Brothers Grimm was first published in 1882 as a lavish edition of fiftythree fairy tales featuring over a hundred illustrations. The drawing was made for The Goose Girl, the tale of a princess forced to work as a lowly laborer by the evil handmaiden who assumed her royal identity. In this scene, the princess calls up a wind to blow away the hat of a bothersome boy (2022).
