Label TextThe shape of this Turkish-Style Coffee Service-including the pot's elongated handle and spout and its bulbous body-was inspired by vessels from the Middle East. While such historical design formats and motifs were of interest to both Clemens Friedell and Porter Blanchard, Blanchard's work was typically sparer, his elegant forms rarely embellished with ornate surface decoration. Porter Blanchard was born in Gardner, Massachusetts, and trained with his father George Porter Blanchard, a prominent New England silversmith. Together with his brother Richard, Porter worked in his father's shop from 1909 to 1914. He exhibited his work at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit in 1912, and soon he became a member of the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston. In 1923 he moved to Southern California and set up a silversmith shop in Burbank. His father and brother joined him there two years later to become part of a workshop that, at times, included as many as 25 craftsmen. Porter Blanchard quickly rose to prominence in the region and in 1924 became the first president of the Arts and Crafts Society of Southern California.
