Label TextBanting attended the Westminster School of Art in London. An experimenter in the graphic arts, he has been called one of the most inventive print makers of his generation. Works such as this often served as the basis for prints, but none is known to relate to this particular drawing. On a visit to Paris in 1930, he became acquainted with avant-garde artists. The composition and technique of this drawing show Banting's familiarity with Cubism and Surrealism in its abstraction and juxtaposition of forms. Musical instruments are a recurring theme in his work from this period, and reflect his taste in contemporary music, especially Jazz. Banting participated in the Surrealist Exhibition of 1936 in London.
