DescriptionOne of a pair of large "famille rose" jars of the Qianlong dynasty. The jar is decorated with animals and the borders decorated with pheasants and other birds. The bases on which they stand are made of gilt wood (they are not original). "Famille rose" jars are one of the finest, and most popular, models of vases. "Famille rose" porcelain was introduced in the Yong Zhen period. The style of painting is freer and decorations often include figure subjects as well as flowers and fruit. The prominent rose pink background was probably introduced from Europe, where it was known as Purple of Cassius.
