Venus and Cupid

Follower (Italian, ca. 1608 - 1661)
ClassificationsSCULPTURE
Dateearly 17th Century
Mediumbronze
Dimensions9 in. (22.9 cm.)
DescriptionA female figure having just emerged from the bath in the act of drying herself with her left hand; with her right she holds up a small drapery. She bends her head, looking down to the left. Beside her, seated on a high pedestal, is a child sleeping, his head thrown back and supported by his right sarm, which rests against the woman's thigh. The introduction of this little figure has caused the composition to be designated "Venus and Cupid." Replica (with addition of the child) of the well-known figure of a woman bathing, illustrated in Bode's Bronze Statuettes of the Italian Renaissance.
