Label TextA bow, quiver, and leopard skin transform the teenage daughter of the Marquis de Savigny-les-Beaune into Diana, the goddess of the hunt. Nattier specialized in these so-called “mythological portraits.” Although his somewhat generalized depictions of rosy-cheeked beauties led critics to accuse him of painting with makeup rather than paint, he was in great demand among ladies of the French court who wished to be depicted as goddesses, nymphs, and muses.
