BiographyArthur Devis was born in Preston, Lancashire, February 12, 1712 and died in Brighton, July 25, 1787.Having formed his meticulous style in the London studio of Peter Tillemans (a Flemish topographical and sporting painter), Devis painted scenery around his native Preston from 1733-42. He returned to London as a portraitist specializing in conversation pieces and was elected president of the Free Society in 1768. Eclipsed by his sophisticated rival Johann Zoffany, Devis turned to professional art restoration in the 1770s. After auctioning his studio contents in 1783, he retired to Brighton.
