Description"This one drawer stand has typical paint attributes associated with a group of furniture thought to be made in the Paris, Maine area (the precise location of furniture found in this style includes locations beyond Paris). This decoration typically starts with a rosewood simulation executed in combed or bushed black and red paint. The pieces from this group often have yellow pin stripes adjacent to broader stripes in green. Sometimes they are overlaid with gilt stenciled designs. In this case the front of the drawer is embellished with a stenciled floral device that covers most of the panel formed by the yellow pinstripe. The front of the legs are decorated with intersecting arcs of yellow that are drawn freehand. While a number of one drawer stands are known from this group, most are without the theorem embellishment on the drawer. They are most often ill proportioned with heavy legs and very little overhang of the top. This stand exhibits a significantly more fully tapered leg and a more generous overhang. These design improvements result in one of the most pleasingly proportioned stands of this group. This school of painted furniture emanated directly from the broader, dominant furniture style of the Federal period with its predilection for inlay, exotic veneers and squared tapered legs. This regional Maine style occurred late enough to adopt some of the forms associated with the Empire style that appeared late in the Federal period. The stand is constructed of bass wood. The joinery is simple with mortised and tenoned legs and sides that are pegged together. The drawer is carefully dovetailed on all corners- and has a champhered bottom."
