The clasp is embossed in gold: 'Elihu Vedder from William Rinehart.' William Rinehart (1825-1874), like Vedder, was an American ex-patriot living in Italy. A sculptor, Rinehart made Italy his home from 1858 until his death in Rome in 1874. The inside front cover of the book has a cut-out pencilled design around the name/word 'Bordigher' attached. Beneath this, written in black ink is 'See other beautiful drawings/ Elihu Vedder's note book/ mushrooms (Funghi disegui)'.
