Label TextThis small oil study depicts Fort Gwalior, a strategic gateway to western India during the second war between the British and the Hindu State of Mysore in 1780–1784. Discouraged by the limited market in Britain for paintings of native scenery, the artist William Hodges went to India and became the first professional landscape painter to travel through the region. In this painting, Hodges alters the actual topography around Fort Gwalior to depict an idyllic landscape in line with the conventions of classical landscape design of his time.
