Label TextJames Stopford sat for this painting while on his Grand Tour, a journey undertaken by wealthy young men as a means of studying the politics, culture, and art of other countries, often with particular regard to the classical antiquities of Italy. The inclusion of a classical pedestal and column place Stopford's presence in Rome, a main stop on the tour. Elegant images such as this established Batoni's reputation as Rome's foremost painter of Grand Tour portraits.
