Label TextThis painting features the rich and exotic nature of the subject. The delicacy of the lady’s complexion, hair, transparent veil, and shawl contrasts with the hard luminosity of her elaborate jewelry. Rather than the picture of an identifiable sitter, this type of portrait-like painting was known as a tronie—a genre pioneered by Rembrandt, Flinck’s teacher—in which the subject wears rich antique or foreign costume.
