Label TextJohn Weesop was a Flemish painter who went to England in search of patronage at the court of Charles I. This painting shows Marmaduke D’Arcy, brother of the Earl of Holdernesse. D’Arcy commanded his brother’s regiment after the outbreak of the Civil War in 1643. He wears the blue silk sash that identifies him as a commissioned officer and a loyal supporter of the king.Status
