Label TextThe focus of this portrait is undoubtedly D’Arcy’s glittering embroidered sleeve and blue silk sash, expertly painted by Weesop to mimic its smooth and reflective qualities. This costume identifies him as a commander for the Royalists, forces loyal to King Charles I in the English Civil War (1642–1651). In this devastating and deadly conflict, Royalists and those loyal to Parliament warred over the role of Parliament in the government. Aft er the Royalists lost the war and Charles I was beheaded in 1649, D ’Arcy was exiled to France along with the King’s son, the future Charles II.
