Label TextThe French art critic Denis Diderot praised Drouais’s depictions of children. “He puts life, transparency, humility, and charm in their eyes…They seem to watch you and smile at you, even up close.” Peaches traditionally symbolize truth. In this portrait, Drouais may allude to the proverbial notion of truths that come from the mouths of babes.
