Label TextFrenzied Effort depicts a drawing class at the Whitney Studio Club, which was founded in 1918 by wealthy heiress Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The club held exhibitions, provided a place to continue training, and served as an important gathering place for artists. Whitney became the patron of many of the club's members and in 1931 established the Whitney Museum of American Art.

As in other works from this period, Bacon crowded her composition with figures. The people depicted are her friends and colleagues-fellow printmaker Mabel Dwight is seated at the far left, wearing a hat.
