Label TextThe German painter Zoffany came to London around 1760. He was favored by Queen Charlotte, an active patron of German art and music. This portrait of an unknown woman shows his skill at rendering material objects with vivid precision, seen here particularly in the play of light on the folds of ruffled satin at the sitter’s bodice.
