Label Text:Ida Abelman approached the subway with ambivalence, if not outright dread, portraying it as a hellish place where people were shoved into underground trains. Abelman was an activist for workers' rights, and with this image she may have been commenting on the crowded conditions and noxious atmosphere suffered by working-class commuters as they rode the subway.
