Label TextWhen Millier created this picturesque view of Bunker Hill, it was a neighborhood of run-down Victorian mansions in downtown Los Angeles. The area had been one of the city's most exclusive neighborhoods, but after World War I, the wealthy began to move to suburbs. The grand Bunker Hill homes were subdivided, and working class residents lived in the neighborhood until the 1950s, when a redevelopment project began to demolish the buildings in the area.

Millier was an important art critic for the Los Angeles Times in the 1920s. In 1928, he was one of eight printmakers, including Frank Geritz, to form the Los Angeles Print Group, which promoted the work of printmakers.
