Label TextMany of Beverley’s watercolors use the panoramic format seen in this example. The lack of a concentrated viewpoint creates a sense of vast space. Bands of blue, yellow, and gray stretch across the width of the sheet, enhancing the feeling of an expansive landscape. Subtle blending of pale yellow and blue tints evokes the last faint light of day. A lone tower, bathed in shadow, pierces the skyline of an otherwise empty landscape, suggesting a contemplative or even melancholy mood. The inclusion of such a brooding element likely draws upon Beverley’s training as a theatrical scene painter.
