Label TextDaubigny painted many scenes of rivers and lakes in the French countryside, often working outdoors, en plein air, and almost always on a manageably small scale. He preferred horizontal compositions with water dominating the foreground and closely observed skies filling the distance. His vigorous paint strokes, demonstrated in the roiling clouds and streaky water, anticipate the dynamic brushwork of the Impressionists.
